THE RETENTION ENEMA

THE RETENTION ENEMA

There are two types of enema, the cleansing enema lubricates the bowels to make it easier for stools to pass and the retention enema, which is usually oil-based, is absorbed by the bowel walls. The patient then has to wait for 15 minutes to an hour before releasing the contents from the bowels.

A retention enema is one that is used to deliver nutrients, medication or anesthetic to the colon. For instance, a betamethasone enema is a corticosteroid that is used to treat ulcerative colitis by reducing inflammation. Other types of retention enemas are Vitamin E enemas which provide therapeutic protection for the gut; fish oil enemas which also treats UC; probiotic enemas helps promote weight loss and strengthen the immune system and other natural remedies for ulcerative colitis such as calendula, turmeric and rhubarb.

Enema Bag

Unlike the cleansing enema, only small amounts of the retention enema is administered so the patient can hold in the solution. Retention enemas are administered by using a bulb syringe or enema bag. Sometimes the solution is warmed a bit to avoid discomfort.

ADMINISTRATION PROCESS

It will take around 15 minutes for the preparation and another 15 to 30 minutes to complete the whole procedure so devote a time to doing this where you will not be disturbed. It is advisable to consult your doctor before doing the procedure by yourself.

Follow directions carefully when mixing an enema solution. Make sure the solution is not cold unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.

Sterilize the bulb syringe under lukewarm water for 3 to 4 hours. Do this ahead of time. Drain and then fill the bulb syringe with enema solution. Lay on your side but make sure first to put some towels underneath in case there may be spills. Stay relax and calm as it might be harder to insert the enema bulb when rectal muscles are tightened.

Vitamin E Enemas

Lubricate the tip of the bulb and the anus with petroleum jelly. Slowly and gently insert the tip inside the rectum for not further than two inches. Squeeze the bulb to dispense the solution. Pre-planning the procedure will help to avoid discomfort and ease the entire process.

Remain on your side for 15 minutes or so. Go to the toilet once you feel the urge to do a bowel movement.

If symptoms of pain persist, call a doctor. As always, consult a healthcare professional before using an enema on your own.
