Salt Water Enema

7 Natural and Homemade Enema Solutions

To maintain colon health, there are several enema solutions you can try. In this article, we have listed seven enema recipes commonly used due to their effectiveness. They are easy to prepare and safe to use at home.

Caution: There are essential preparations when it comes to administering enemas. This article only provides different enema recipes.

No matter what enema solution you choose, keep in mind to only use water that is filtered and chlorine-free. The solution must also be heated to a warm temperature (around 98-104˚ F or 37-40˚ C).

Enema Solutions:

  1. Salt Water Enema

Salt water enemas are the best choice if it is your first time to try enemas. It is the easiest to prepare and the most comfortable solution to use.

Saline enema solutions would not draw water into the colon and electrolytes from the body, unlike plain water solutions. This is due to the neutral concentration gradient. Since salt lowers the amount of water that enters into the bloodstream, you won’t feel the need to urinate that much while retaining this solution. So if you prefer to retain an enema for a long period of time, this is the right solution for you.

Recipe for Salt Water Enema:

  • 2 liters filtered water (temperature must be warm)
  • 2 tsp pure sea salt

Mix the ingredients together until the sea salt is completely dissolved. Administer the solution. Retain for 30 to 40 minutes.

  1. Epsom Salt Enema

Also known as magnesium sulfate, Epsom salts are available in most health stores and pharmacies. They are usually consumed to treat constipation or used in baths to provide muscle pain relief.

Due to the high amounts of magnesium in Epsom salts, this enema recipe relaxes the intestinal tract’s muscles and triggers everything in the colon to be eliminated.

It is much better to use epsom salts through enema because it provides faster healing benefits. Doing so increases the water amount in your intestine due to its ability to draw water into your colon. As a result, your intestinal tract will be thoroughly cleansed.

Epsom Salt Enema

Recipe of Epsom Salt Enema:

  • 2 liters filtered water (temperature must be warm)
  • 4 tbsp of Epsom salts

Mix the ingredients together. The Epsom salts must be completely dissolved before administering it. Retain for about 30 minutes.

Important reminder:

  • This recipe is not recommended for those who are experiencing nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.
  • There is about 35 grams of magnesium sulfate content in one tablespoon of Epsom salts. Only 400 milligrams is the recommended daily allowance for magnesium. Excessive use may cause hypermagnesemia, a condition that could be fatal. Even though this is rare, careful use is advised because of the risk of toxicity.
  1. Coffee Enema

Many people have been using coffee enemas for years. The palmitates content in coffee plays a huge role in its detoxification abilities. Aside from a cup of coffee each day, a coffee enema might just be what you need for a powerful detox.

Since a coffee enema does not enter the digestive system, it will not have the same effect as drinking your favorite coffee. When administered through the rectum, the caffeine goes directly to your liver.

Coffee consists of substances, such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, that dilate blood vessels and triggers the flow of bile. Bile is a fluid made and released by the liver as it eliminates toxins. Before being eliminated through a bowel movement, bile is usually reabsorbed by the intestinal walls up to 10 times. Thankfully, coffee enemas help avoid this. By drawing out the toxic substances in your colon, toxic bile is also eliminated from your body.

Coffee Enema

Recipe of Coffee Enema:

  • 1 liter filtered water
  • 3 tbsp coffee (must be organic)

In a large pot, mix the ingredients together. Bring the mixture into a boil for 3-4 minutes. Lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool down before filtering. Administer and retain for at least 10 to 50 minutes.

Important reminders:

  • For a more powerful detox, you can administer another coffee enema after 6 hours. Doing so will eliminate more of the toxic bile that is left.
  • Enema solution enters directly to your liver. To avoid any toxicity, see to it that you only choose organic coffee in your enema recipe.
  • Administering coffee enema late at night may cause you to experience the caffeine’s side effects. If you have coffee sensitivity, it is best to avoid coffee enemas completely.
  • Avoid using coffee enemas for more than 4 weeks. Regular use may lower your body’s iron, together with other minerals and vitamins.
  1. Acidophilus Enema

This enema recipe is another powerful way to give your colon a detox, as well as a boost of good bacteria. Live culture injected through enemas has a better chance for survival, in comparison to oral consumption.

Acidophilus or yoghurt enema solutions help treat symptoms of IBS, hemorrhoids, constipation, and colon cancer.

If you use enema regularly, it may reduce the good bacteria in your colon. That's the reason why it is a better choice to administer an acidophilus enema solution once in a while.

Acidophilus Enema

Recipe of Acidophilus Enema:

  • 1 liter filtered water (temperature must be warm)
  • 4 tbsp acidophilus capsules, or 4 tbsp probiotic yoghurt (you may also use 1 teaspoon of powdered acidophilus)

If using capsules, open it first. Mix together acidophilus powder or yoghurt into the warm water. Administer the solution and retain for at least 15 minutes. In that way, there is more time for the beneficial bacteria to make its way into the intestine.

  1. Lemon Juice Enema

We all know that lemons are refreshing, right? They are also famous for their cleansing properties.

Lemon juice enema is perfect for balancing the colon’s pH levels. It is able to eliminate toxins and help with proper bowel movement. If you are suffering from symptoms related to colitis, it is recommended for you to use a lemon juice enema once every week. Doing so can give you relief from constipation.

Unlike salt water enemas, lemon juice enemas are not easy to retain due to the lemon juice.

Lemon Juice Enema

  • 2/3 cup lemon juice (freshly squeezed)

Instructions: Filter the freshly squeezed juice from 2-3 lemons. Filter and combine with water. Mix well. Administer carefully and retain for about 10 minutes.

Important reminder:

  • Using lemon juice solutions may cause cramping and slightly irritate the intestinal lining. If it is your first time to try it, use half the amount of lemon juice. Observe your body before trying the full recipe.

  1. Salt and Soda Enema

Baking soda is very effective in neutralizing acids since it is rich in alkaline. If you are suffering from any conditions related to too much acidity, this is the right enema solution for you. It also assists in restoring the proper balance of acid and alkaline when you’re sick.

For those who have colitis, this recipe is also a great option due to its ability to inhibit and treat ulcers in the colon due to high amounts of acidity.

  • 2 tsp pure sea salt

Combine ingredients. The salt and soda must be completely dissolved. Mix well until the salt and soda are dissolved. Administer carefully and retain for about 10 minutes.

  • Always use this recipe in moderation. Regular or excessive use of baking soda in enemas may result in high amounts of alkaline in the body.

  1. Milk and Molasses Enema (M+M)

Milk and Molasses Enema

Do you want to get rid of toxins and detox your colon? Here is an old remedy used by nurses before it got replaced by present-day formulas.

Combining these two ingredients can produce explosive results. However, it still depends on each person’s colon.

This solution contains excessive sugar content which speedily feeds bacteria. In the process of metabolizing the sugars, the bacteria create gas, which assists the enema in flowing deeper into the colon.

This recipe is very safe and effective when used in enemas due to the formula’s ability to stimulate peristalsis. However, you may also experience cramping because of this. You may also find it a bit harder to retain for a long time due to the milk and molasse gas production.

Recipe of Milk and Molasses Enema:

  • 1 to 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 to 2 cups blackstrap molasses (organic)

Instructions: In a pan, pour the milk and bring to a boil for just a few seconds. Avoid overheating the milk so it won’t curdle. Remove from the heat. Add in the molasses and mix thoroughly. Allow the mixture to cool before administering it. Retain for at least 10 minutes.

Important reminders:

  • The milk and molasses enema recipe is one of the messiest solutions to use. Using a disposable bag is recommended so you won’t have a hard time cleaning it afterward. See to it that you also have an old towel beneath you in case there are spills.
  • The consistency of this solution is way thicker in comparison to other solutions. You may notice that it can’t easily flow through the enema tubing and you will need to hang the bag higher.
  • This solution easily causes cramping, that’s why you have to administer it as quickly as possible.
  • For best results, it is best if you can administer the full amount of the milk and molasses enema solution.
  • Feel free to use anywhere between 1 to 2 cups each of molasses and milk. No matter what you choose, see to it that both ingredients are in equal amounts.
